این مقاله به تاریخ ایران بزرگ (همچنین ایران‌زمین یا ایرانشهر)[۱][۲] شامل محدودهٔ جغرافیایی و حوزه تمدنی فلات ایران و جلگه‌های مجاور آن،[۳] شامل ایران کنونی، بخش بزرگی قفقاز، افغانستان و آسیای مرکزی می‌پردازد.[۴] که در زبان‌های فرنگی از آن معمولاً با عنوان پرشیای بزرگ یا پارس بزرگ یاد می‌کنند.[۵][۶][۷] کاربرد تاریخی ایران صرفاً محدود به کشوری که هم‌اکنون به این نام خوانده می‌شود، نبوده و تمام مرزهای سیاسی کشوری که تحت تسلط ایرانیان بود همچو بین‌النهرین و اغلب ارمنستان و جنوب قفقاز را هم در بر می‌گیرد.[۸][۹]
هگل، ایرانیان را نخستین ملت تاریخی و شاهنشاهی ایران را اولین امپراتوری تاریخ می‌داند.[۱۰] هنگامی که سخن از تاریخ ایران می‌رود، باید به این نکته توجه داشت که آیا منظور تاریخ اقوام و مردمانی است که از آغاز تاریخ تا کنون در مرزهای سیاسی ایران امروزی زیسته‌اند یا تاریخ اقوام و مردمانی است که خود را به نحوی از انحاء ایرانی می‌خوانده‌اند و در جغرافیایی که دربرگیرندهٔ ایران امروز و سرزمین‌هایی که از دیدگاه تاریخی بخشی از ایران بزرگ (ایرانشهر) بوده‌است زیسته‌اند. ایران گاه تاریخ ایران را از ورود آریایی‌ها که نام ایران نیز از ایشان گرفته شده‌است، به فلات ایران آغاز می‌کنند؛ ولی این به این معنی نیست که فلات ایران تا پیش از ورود ایشان خالی از سکنه یا تمدن بوده‌است. پیش از ورود آریاییان به فلات ایران تمدن‌های بسیار کهنی در این محل شکفته و پژمرده شده بودند و تعدادی نیز هنوز شکوفا بودند. برای نمونه تمدن نوشیجان در ملایر[۱۱][۱۲] تمدن شهر سوخته در سیستان، تمدن عیلام در شمال خوزستان، تمدن جیرفت در کرمان، تمدن تپه سیلک در کاشان، تمدن پارسوا در پیرانشهر، تمدن اورارتو در آذربایجان، تمدن تپه گیان در نهاوند و تمدن مانناییان در کردستان و آذربایجان و و تمدن کاسی‌ها در لرستان ذکر می‌شود.

The history of Iran, commonly also known as Persia in the Western world, is intertwined with the history of a larger region, also to an extent known as Greater Iran, comprising the area from Anatolia, the Bosphorus, and Egypt in the west to the borders of Ancient India and the Syr Darya in the east, and from the Caucasus and the Eurasian Steppe in the north to the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman in the south.
Iran is home to one of the world's oldest continuous major civilizations, with historical and urban settlements dating back to 7000 BC.[1] The southwestern and western part of the Iranian Plateau participated in the traditional Ancient Near East with Elam, from the Early Bronze Age, and later with various other peoples, such as the Kassites, Mannaeans, and Gutians. Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel names the Persians as the first Historical People.[2] The Medes unified Iran as a nation and empire in 625 BC.[3] The Achaemenid Empire (550–330 BC), founded by Cyrus the Great, was the first of the Persian empires to rule from the Balkans to North Africa and also Central Asia, spanning three continents, from their seat of power in Persis (Persepolis). It was the largest empire yet seen and the first world empire.[4] The First Persian Empire was the only civilization in all of history to connect over 40% of the global population, accounting for approximately 49.4 million of the world's 112.4 million people in around 480 BC.[5] They were succeeded by the Seleucid, Parthian and Sasanian Empires, who successively governed Iran for almost 1000 years and made Iran once again as a leading power in the world. Persia's arch-rival was the Roman Empire and its successor, the Byzantine Empire.
The Persian Empire proper begins in the Iron Age, following the influx of Iranian peoples. Iranian people gave rise to the Medes, the Achaemenid, Parthian, and Sasanian Empires of classical antiquity.
Once a major empire of superpower proportions,[6][7] having conquered far and wide, Iran has endured invasions too, by the Greeks, Arabs, Turks, and the Mongols. Iran has continually reasserted its national identity throughout the centuries and has developed as a distinct political and cultural entity.
